Friday Format Sweep 4 Sept 26

Most of what landed in the format trade press this week wasn't new. It was old shows getting a fresh coat of paint.

Channel 4 sent Taskmaster home for a spin-off. A German guessing game show picked up an international distributor for its second season. Reboots and renewals again, the pattern I keep flagging in these weekly scans. But one commission cut through, and it wasn't a reboot. It was a business model.

ABC has ordered Limited Time Offer, a reality competition from Gary Vaynerchuk's production company VaynerWatt. Contestants invent branded food mashups for real companies, and the winning product doesn't just win a trophy, it goes on sale in actual stores the day after the episode airs.

That's the format doing commerce, not just talking about it. The show is the product launch. If the mashup is bad, there's nowhere to hide, it's on a shelf, not just a scoreboard.

It fits something I've been tracking through the year: formats built around real-world stakes rather than studio stakes. Banijay's Live Better for Less, still rolling out across Europe, ties a lifestyle format to actual reselling and cost-cutting behaviour rather than just discussing it. Limited Time Offer points that same idea at retail.

Everything else this week was format management, not format thinking. Channel 4 commissioned a play-at-home version of Taskmaster from creator Alex Horne, working title Your Time Starts Now. And ZDF Studios picked up international distribution rights for Neo Match Up, a German guessing game show already into its second domestic season on ZDFneo.

Nothing wrong with either move. Reboots and renewals are how a library earns its keep. But they don't grow it.

If you're developing formats right now, the question worth asking isn't "what's the game." It's "what happens if the audience acts on it." Limited Time Offer answers that with a barcode.

See you next week
