The Friday Format Sweep 28 Aug 2026
No new TV format concepts broke this week, just revivals. Deal or No Deal, The Traitors and The Grand Tour all came back with a twist. Here's what it means for development.
Nobody pitched anything new this week. They just went back for what already worked.
Look at the last seven days of trade press. Sat.1 in Germany just brought Deal or No Deal back after more than a decade off air. Peacock is making a version of The Traitors with regular people, not celebrities. A Dutch dating format just landed its Brazilian version. And Amazon's Grand Tour is back too, not with Clarkson, Hammond and May this time, but with a trainspotter and two YouTubers. Four stories, four different broadcasters, four different countries, and not one of them is a new idea.
There's a pattern inside the pattern. Traitors dropped the celebrities for civilians. Grand Tour dropped three of the biggest names in British broadcasting for Francis Bourgeois and the two guys from Throttle House. That's worth a note to anyone in development. Real people are making a comeback.
This is not a slow news week by accident. Development budgets are down across the board, and a renewal or a spin-off is a much safer bet than a blank page. I've written before about why the formats that win long-term are the ones that get recommissioned, not the ones that launch biggest. This week is that argument playing out in real time, four times over.
The two genuinely new format concepts still on my radar both landed last week and are worth repeating here because they're the exception, not the rule. A vertical, mobile-first quiz show from a new US partnership between Keller/Noll and Crazy Legs Productions, no broadcaster attached yet. And Banijay's Live Better for Less, a branded cost of living format rolling out across Europe with commercial partners built in from the start, which says as much about where format revenue is coming from as the format itself does.
If you're in development right now, the read for me is simple. Budget for extension and renewal work, because that is where the commissions are actually landing. New IP is not dead, but it is rarer, and it needs to be exceptional to get past a commissioner who has a proven format sitting right there as the safer option.
