The New Format Model: Follow the Money, Not the Flag

The week’s most revealing new format was developed in Britain, commissioned in Norway and built for global distribution—a production route that may become increasingly familiar.

BBC Studios is taking a Norwegian reality show called The Yacht to MIPCOM as the lead title on its unscripted slate. Twelve guests, one boat, daily challenges, cash, eliminations. And a twist the producers are keeping quiet, framed as: who are you when you think no one is watching? It was developed in the UK by Rebel Rebel, commissioned by NRK, and made by BBC Studios Norway.

Read that workflow again. UK idea. Norwegian money. Global sale. That is the new model at work. With Channel 4 cutting 340 jobs and Indielab saying 40% of UK indies could fail within two years, yet the UK is still where formats get invented. The commission just happens somewhere cheaper first.

Japan is running the same play from the other direction. Nippon TV's Gyokuro Studio, set up a year ago purely to make formats for export, brings Ultra Mission to Cannes: world-class specialists attempting the near impossible, like a footballer kicking a ball through the window of a moving bus. It has been a New Year special in Japan since 2011. Fifteen years of proof before it ever went to market.

So the lesson for anyone developing formats: the question is no longer "who will commission this at home?" It is "which broadcaster anywhere in the world will prove it, and which distributor will carry it?" Follow the money, not the flag.

Also this week: Peacock locked in three more seasons of The Traitors after its third straight Emmy. The deduction genre is not slowing down.
